Stifel's mathematical achievements

Despite some personal peculiarities, Stifel was an outstanding mathematician and thus the first important exponent of this science that Germany produced.

His main work, consisting of three books, "Mathematica integra" (Complete Mathematics), was published in Nuremberg in 1544. In it he presented the mathematical knowledge of his time - www.domyhomework.club - both that which was handed down and that which he had found himself and with which he had enriched mathematics.

The first book deals with the basic arithmetic operations and theorems of number theory - https://domyhomework.club/geometry-homework/ . Unlike its predecessors, Stifel not only gives examples, but also names rules and gives instructions. The second book deals with problems of number ranges on a geometrical basis. Finally, the third book is devoted to algebra .

In his work, Stifel consistently used the signs “+” and “-”, and he also used the “root hook” as a symbol for etching. (The original character “r” as an abbreviation for the Latin word radix , i.e. root, became a symbol.) The term exponent also goes back to him.

Above all, however, Stifel provides new ways and methods. While the Italian mathematicians still distinguished numerous types of quadratic equations and used a corresponding number of solution methods, Stifel now showed a uniform way. In doing so, he operated without hesitation with negative numbers, which he interpreted as differences, but without accepting negative solutions - excel homework assignments . To give another example, our current method for division by a fraction, i.e. multiplication by the reciprocal value, goes back to Stifel.
